A few years ago, during a visit to Punjab, I met an 18 year-old boy whose story changed my life forever. He was a simple, innocent boy, uneducated and working as a helper on a truck to earn his daily bread. He told me that one day, he was kidnapped by some unknown men. He was drugged and taken to a secret location. When he woke up, he was in terrible pain. He had been operated on, and one of his kidneys had been stolen.
He was uneducated, so he could not read the signboards to know where he was. He was terrified, so he could not fight back. When he lifted his shirt to show me the crude, ugly stitches on his stomach, tears came to my eyes. There stood a healthy young man, ruined by greed. At that moment, I felt a fire burning inside me.
I wanted to help him, but I felt helpless. I didn’t know how to fight such a big mafia back then. But today, that helplessness has turned into a mission. With this new initiative by News4Deaf, I know I can prevent such terrible things from happening to any other innocent person.
The Scary Reality: 8.7 Lakh People Missing Every Year
We often ignore the small “Missing Person” posters at railway stations. But the reality is terrifying. According to records, around 8.7 Lakh (8,70,000) people go missing every year in India. Imagine the entire population of a big city just vanishing into thin air every year.
While this tragedy affects everyone, it is a nightmare for the Deaf and Mute community. Because they cannot speak or hear, they are the most vulnerable. Since the government does not keep a separate count for them, nobody knows the exact number. But based on the population and our research, we estimate that more than 40,000 deaf and mute people go missing annually. This number is still on lower side because in our villages many poor families are too scared to even go to the police station.
The Dark World: Why Are They Abducted?
You might wonder, why are so many people being kidnapped? It is not just about kidnapping for ransom. It is a well-organized industry of crime. Abductors target both healthy people (like the truck helper I met) and disabled people for various cruel illegal activities:
Organ Transplant Rackets:
This is a horror story for many. Healthy, strong individuals are kidnapped, drugged, and their kidneys, livers, or corneas are surgically removed to be sold to rich buyers. The victim is often left to die or thrown on the roadside.
The Begging Mafia:
This is visible at every traffic signal. Gangs kidnap children and force them to beg. They specifically look for deaf and mute children because the public feels more pity for them. Even worse, healthy children are sometimes deliberately injured or maimed by these gangs to make them look disabled, just to get more alms from people.
Prostitution and Human Trafficking:
Thousands of girls and young women vanish every year only to be sold into brothels. For a deaf girl, the situation is even worse because she cannot scream for help or tell a customer her story.
Forced Labor and Slavery:
Many missing men and boys end up in brick kilns, dangerous factories, or as bonded laborers on farms in different states. They are worked like animals, given little food, and beaten if they try to run away.
Illegal Drug Muling:
Traffickers often use kidnapped children or confused adults to carry drugs across state borders. If they are caught, the innocent person goes to jail while the mafia boss stays safe.
Medical Testing:
There are even reports of missing people being used for illegal clinical trials of new medicines without their consent.
News4Deaf: A High-Tech Shield for the People
We cannot fight this organized crime with old methods. News4Deaf is now taking a historic step. We are going to coordinate directly with the Indian Government and the Police Department to deploy a technology that criminals cannot hide from.
We are proposing to install Advanced Face Recognition Cameras at critical locations like Railway Stations, Bus Stands, and religious places where crowds are huge.
How Our Technology Will Work
These are not normal CCTV cameras. These are smart systems designed to save lives:
Instant Face Matching:
The camera will scan the faces of people passing by. It will instantly check these faces against our massive database of missing people (both healthy and disabled). If a match is found, an alert goes directly to the Police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) within seconds.
The 30-Day Memory Advantage:
This is our biggest weapon. In India, poor families often report a missing person after 5 or 10 days. They search everywhere themselves first. By the time they go to the police, the normal CCTV footage at the station is already deleted (usually after 24 hours).
Our system will have a 30-Day Memory.
If a father comes to the police saying his son went missing 2 weeks ago, the police can use our system to go back in time. They can check the footage from 14 days ago, see who the boy was with, identify the kidnapper’s face, and track their movements.
A Promise to Every Indian Family
We are not just building a website; we are building a national safety net. By connecting our technology with the Government’s power, we ensure that the police have the “eyes” they need to catch these criminals.
I could not save that 18-year old boy in Punjab. I cannot give him back his kidney or his health. But his tears started a revolution in my heart. With News4Deaf, we are turning that pain into a shield for others.
We will ensure that whether a person is deaf, mute, or healthy, they are not forgotten. We will watch over them, we will find them, and we will bring them home.
