INVESTIGATION CHECKLIST:
STEP 1: RECEIVE COMPLAINT (BNSS Section 173)
* Register FIR immediately.
* Note exact items stolen with description and value.
* Record time and date of theft.
STEP 2: VISIT CRIME SCENE
* Visit scene as soon as possible.
* Look for point of entry/exit and signs of break-in.
* Note method used by thief.
* Take photographs of scene.
STEP 3: FORENSIC EXAMINATION (BNSS Section 176)
For robbery cases (mandatory):
* Call forensic expert.
* Video record crime scene.
* Collect fingerprints, footprints, and tool marks.
* Collect any items left by thief.
STEP 4: EVIDENCE COLLECTION
Collect:
* Fingerprints from surfaces.
* Footprint impressions and tool marks.
* Blood samples (if thief injured).
* CCTV footage (if available).
STEP 5: WITNESS STATEMENTS (BNSS Section 180)
Record statements of:
* Complainant (property owner).
* Watchman/security guard, neighbors, and anyone who saw suspicious persons.
STEP 6: PROPERTY LIST
Prepare detailed list including:
* Description of each stolen item, serial numbers, photographs, and purchase bills/receipts.
STEP 7: INVESTIGATION
* Check local pawn shops and second-hand dealers.
* Inform nearby police stations.
* Check criminal records of known thieves.
* Issue lookout notice for stolen items.
STEP 8: WHEN PROPERTY RECOVERED
* Seize recovered property immediately.
* Prepare panchnama of seizure.
* Take photographs of recovered items.
* Get items identified by owner.
* Maintain chain of custody.
STEP 9: SUSPECT ARREST
When thief arrested:
* Search suspect’s house (with warrant) and seize stolen property.
* Check suspect’s fingerprints with scene prints.
* Record statement and conduct medical examination if injured.
STEP 10: COMPLETE INVESTIGATION (BNSS Section 193)
* Submit all evidence to court.
* Return property to owner after court order.
* Complete investigation report and file chargesheet within 60 days.
